Around 9:30 p.m. Sunday, when the National Invitational Tournament gave North Carolina a No. 4 seed and a home opener, there were two buzz words in the Tar Heel locker room: relief and surprise.

March 16, 2010

Despite dropping an unexpected number of games this season, North Carolina managed to get a postseason bid.

The 10th-seeded North Carolina women’s basketball team will open NCAA tournament play against No. 7-seed Gonzaga at 10:30 p.m. Saturday in the Sacramento region.

March 15, 2010

Wide smiles, hearty laughs and soaring chest bumps could be seen across Henry Stadium on Monday afternoon.

It marked the first day of spring football for North Carolina, and the players were thrilled just to be back in uniform — even if it was only in helmets and gym shorts.

March 15, 2010

Even after winning his match, North Carolina freshman Jose Hernandez didn’t leave the court.

Instead, he hit ball after ball in a drill he calls “Speed and Power,” in which he has to return eight balls hit all over the court at him in rapid succession.

Strong play from the start helped the No. 30 North Carolina men’s tennis team avenge last year’s loss to N.C. State, winning 6-1 in a match that was closer than the final score indicated.

Senior Clay Donato, ranked 49th nationally, overcame a slow individual start to win his singles match 6-4, 6-2.

RALEIGH — Twenty seconds.

That’s all that separated North Carolina’s Kyle Kiss from a place in the 165-pound finals of the ACC Wrestling Championships and a bid to the NCAA Tournament in Omaha.

North Carolina’s 88-66 win against North Carolina Central went so well that even assistant coach Andrew Calder was seen smiling.

Calder, the usually irascible sidekick to head coach Sylvia Hatchell, would probably not admit it, but he was caught enjoying a laugh with a referee with about 40 seconds left in the game.

With UNC in the midst of playing their most well-rounded game in weeks, it is hard to hold it against him.

Despite its troubles, North Carolina still got a postseason bid.

The Tar Heels, mired in a 16-16 season and a tenth-place finish in the ACC, were nonetheless too attractive a candidate for the National Invitational Tournament to pass up. UNC earned a No. 4 seed.

Three minutes into the second half, Chay Shegog caught a pass at the free throw line and turned to see what the defense had allotted her.

She figured it out pretty quickly.

Instead of using her 6-foot-5 frame to get a shot off over the defense, Shegog took a step back and zipped a pass to a streaking Laura Broomfield for the easy deuce.

UNC junior pitcher Colin Bates left the mound with a 3-2 lead against Duke, but UNC couldn’t hold it.

DURHAM — No. 11 North Carolina and Duke combined for 56 runs while splitting the first two games of their annual series, so a pitching duel wasn’t exactly what they expected in the deciding game on Sunday.

But that’s what they got, as UNC starter Colin Bates and Duke starter Dennis O’Grady prevented either side from jumping out to a big lead like in the two previous games.

GREENSBORO – It’s one and done in the ACC Tournament for the North Carolina men’s basketball team.

The formula for UNC’s latest loss – a 62-58 defeat to Georgia Tech (20-11) – was a familiar one. Too many turnovers, too many missed shots and too much inexperience down the stretch.

GREENSBORO — During the offseason, North Carolina forward Tyler Zeller added width to his 7-foot frame so he’d be more formidable in the post.

He needed every pound against Georgia Tech’s Derrick Favors on Thursday night.

DURHAM — Duke's Saturday-night thrashing of North Carolina was a tale of two seniors.

On one hand, there was Duke's Brian Zoubek. The 7-footer from Haddonfield, N.J., hauled in 13 rebounds as Duke clobbered the Tar Heels on his Senior Night.

DURHAM – In Duke vs. North Carolina, there is seldom a sure thing. But Saturday’s regular season finale was never in doubt.

Duke built a 20-point lead in just 11 minutes and a 30-point lead in 26. After four straight losses to UNC in their own building, the No. 4 Blue Devils took back Cameron Indoor Stadium. Emphatically.

March 7, 2010

Durham — North Carolina trails Duke by 27 points after 20 minutes of play at Cameron Indoor Stadium, 53-26.

Kyle Singler leads the Blue Devils with 19 points. Nolan Smith has 16, and John Scheyer has 11 points and seven assists.

Coming off of two consecutive wins, North Carolina will enter Cameron Indoor Stadium with as much momentum as it has had in months. What it’s short on is a healthy roster.

A huge smile cracked the intense face of Katrina Tsang as she pounded away the final serve of her single’s match.

She worked unceasingly to clinch the win, but North Carolina’s clean  7-0 score against N.C. State would not hint at the battle its players fought.

No. 2 UNC (13-1, 1-0 ACC) bested the Wolfpack for its third straight 7-0 victory, and the 12th consecutive match defeating N.C. State in regular season play.

Nothing went according to plan for the North Carolina baseball team Thursday afternoon.

Down 4-3 against Gardner-Webb after the third inning, the Tar Heels were forced to change tactics to dispatch the Runnin’ Bulldogs.

Coach Mike Fox took out starting pitcher Garrett Davis after the redshirt sophomore gave up four runs on four hits.

March 5, 2010

GREENSBORO – Foul trouble kept Maryland’s Lynetta Kizer on the sidelines for most of the Terrapins’ opening round game of the ACC Tournament.

But her 22 minutes on the court were more than enough for Maryland to send North Carolina packing.

GREENSBORO — With four players on the floor with four fouls, Maryland coach Brenda Frese did not panic.

Although North Carolina had rallied from a 10-point deficit to within four points on a timely 3-pointer from UNC junior guard Cetera DeGraffenreid with 1:20 remaining, she stayed steady.

Largely because there was one player on the floor who had proven to do the same.

March 5, 2010

This Saturday night, it’s chapter two in the 2010 edition of the North Carolina-Duke rivalry.

The Tar Heels are on their first win streak of 2010, with wins against Wake Forest and Miami. The Blue Devils have a No. 4 national ranking and at least a share of the regular-season conference title locked up despite a stinging loss at Maryland on Wednesday night.

For two weeks, coach C.D. Mock tortured the North Carolina wrestling team with practice twice a day.

The wrestlers met in the morning to run sprints in Eddie Smith Field House and up the stairs of Kenan Stadium. They came back in the afternoon to practice. Then they ran some more.

March 5, 2010

What is delayed is not denied.

It’s a simple phrase, but one that resonates deeply with both Jessica Breland and Sylvia Hatchell.

In a season that’s been big on expectations and short on experience, John Henson exemplifies both sides of the Tar Heels.

Life in the Bahamas never fostered Waltiea Rolle’s ambitions of becoming a basketball star. In fact, it never even introduced her the game.

But that could not deter the scouts who recruited her to come play high school ball in the United States in 2005.

“They had a vision that this kid can be a great basketball player,” her high school coach Reed Sutton said. “Before she ever did.”

Tuesday night might have been all about North Carolina’s past, but nothing came easy for the Tar Heels of the present.

After Miami battled back from an 18-point deficit early in the second half to cut the lead to one, it took inspirational play from UNC’s seniors to put the Hurricanes away.

March 4, 2010

For two hours on Tuesday night, a North Carolina basketball team was performing what many take for granted as a simple Tar Heel duty: making history.

On that night at least, UNC was not a team on the brink of missing out on the NIT. It was another group writing its chapter in Tar Heel lore.

With the 69-62 win against visiting Miami, North Carolina became the second basketball program to win 2,000 games.

March 3, 2010

The North Carolina men's basketball team registered its 2000th win Wednesday night with a 69-62 win against Miami.

The Tar Heels rolled to a double-digit advantage in the second half, but the Hurricanes made it interesting with 29 points from Durand Scott to bring the score within two late in the game.
