Only 37 votes by 10:30 at one polling place

November 3, 2009

Voter turnout was slow this morning, but that didn’t stop two supporters from campaigning for Mark Kleinschmidt.

Jason Baker and Erin Crouse hosted a booth outside the First Baptist Church on North Roberson Street, greeting voters as they trickled in.

They said they’ve been there since polls opened at 6:30 a.m., and plan to stay until they close at 7:30 p.m.

By 10:30 a.m., the site had seen only 37 voters.

Students who live on campus are zoned for several different voting precincts around town. This could contribute to the low turnout, Crouse said, considering many students lack transportation.

“In municipal races there aren’t as many people offering rides,” she said.
But she emphasized the importance of voting in non-presidential elections.

“Turnout is everything. In municipal elections your vote matters so much more,” Crouse said. “It has a lot more weight than it does in presidential elections.”
