Kleinschmidt to be Chapel Hill mayor

Wins tight race by 240 votes

November 3, 2009

Mark Kleinschmidt will be the next mayor of Chapel Hill, with about 49.5 percent of the vote compared to Matt Czajkowski's 46.5 percent.

The numbers indicate a hard-fought race as Czajkowski's support from the business community rivaled Kleinschmidt's support from the town's traditional political forces.

Kleinschmidt is likely to build on Kevin Foy's vision for the town.

"That's how we've created the most livable city in America and we've created one of the best places in America to start a small business," he said.

Foy will finish his term in December.

Daily Tar Heel reporter Mark Abadi shares the end of Czajkowski's speech at the Franklin Hotel, after he conceded to Kleinschmidt:

Czajkowski: "Everybody in this room made such a huge contribution so we were all so hopeful. And felt it could be done. We got this close. So thank you everybody and its disappointing of course but it was none the less an extraordinary effort."

Crowd member: "You did a great job." (followed by applause.)

Czajkowski: "Have a drink!"

Crowd member: "Welcome to Chapel Hill."
